A PIECE OF EMILY'S STORY
Meet Emily Diemer-- She's a funny gal with big dreams. At 24 years old, this graduate from Indiana Wesleyan University has started her own photography business in West MI that continues to grow each year.
DESCRIBE HOW YOU REPRESENT THE PERSONALITY TRAIT FUNNY.
If I get one good laugh from a one-liner at a party, I drive home feeling like the funniest person in town. I love to laugh. I’ve done all sorts of ridiculous things to try to get a good laugh. I let my boyfriend chop my hair off on camera, I’ve mastered some terrible dance moves, and I’m always drafting my next witty Facebook status. I have this secret, stupid dream of becoming Twitter famous for my witty tweets. Unfortunately, that’s highly unlikely since I don’t have a Twitter account.
HOW DO YOU IMPACT OTHERS WITH THAT FUNNY PERSONALITY OF YOURS?
I like to think my parents will have a few extra laugh lines from living with me for so long. We used to have a dog, and I’m pretty sure my loud laugh had something to do with why she went deaf.
DOES BEING FUNNY JUST COME NATURALLY? HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH THAT STUFF?
I’ve always been quirky. I love Nicolas Cage. I make weird faces in the mirror while I brush my teeth. I have a crooked tooth that makes it really easy to create farting noises with my mouth. So I guess it comes naturally.
HOW DO YOU SHARE YOUR FUNNY PERSONALITY WITH OTHERS?
As a photographer it’s important to be relatable and fun. On sessions, I don’t take myself too seriously. I figure if I’m willing to do silly things and make a fool of myself, the people I’m photographing will relax and be willing to do silly things as well. And if not, well, maybe I’ll get a good smile for my efforts.
ASIDE FROM BEING FUNNY, EXPLAIN HOW YOU ARE CREATIVE, HARD-WORKING, and RESPONSIBLE.
Owning my own business requires a lot of hard work. I’m running a one (wo)man show. I’m responsible for every aspect of the business. I have to juggle customer service, finances, and the creative aspects each day. Being an artist comes more naturally for me than punching the numbers, but I know that it’s only through hard work that I’m able to make a living doing the things I love.
WHAT ARE YOU UP TO RIGHT NOW?
Since I’m a photographer, December- March is my slow season. The past few months have been spent consuming food, sleeping in, and meeting with couples to discuss their summer weddings! I also do a little bit of design work for a few BIGGBY stores on the side.
WHAT IS YOUR PASSION?
I’m very passionate about ice cream. I’m also passionate about frozen yogurt.
Other than that, I feel most like myself when I’m encouraging and surprising other people. For most of my life that translated into hiding knick knacks around school for other people to find, baking cakes for random classmates, and writing long letters to my friends. So I suppose, if I can’t be eating sweets, my second preference is to be doing something sweet for someone else.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GET UP IN THE MORNING?
Not much. Being self employed means I set my own hours, so unless the smell of bacon makes it to my room, I’m probably not waking up before 9. Maybe I should be like Michael Scott and lay bacon on my George Forman grill the night before? Then I’d have a much better answer.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
Make sure the customer is happy. Over-deliver, over-deliver, over-deliver. This is where the “surprising people” part comes into play. Each package I mail is wrapped in polka dot paper, stuffed with confetti, and delivered before expected. That’s one of the best parts of owning my own business; I get to put my own fun, surprising touches on everything. I always say, owning my own business is fun 364 days of the year. The exception of course is tax day. Somehow the government always manages to surprise me in their own special way on April 18th.
WHO IS YOUR GREATEST INSPIRATION?
Bill Murray. Nicolas Cage. Steve Martin. But mostly, I just want to love like Jesus. It’s fun to goof off and get laughs (intentionally, or perhaps not in Cage’s case), but at the end of the day, my joy comes from a the love He has poured into my life.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS, HOPES & DREAMS?
Other than my secret Twitter-fame dream, I hope I continue to expand my business. My goal is to capture each moment I’m allowed to capture in an honest, loving way.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN WHEN YOU AREN'T BUILDING YOUR BUSINESS?
I’m usually in coffee shops, playing board games and drinking hot chocolate. I spend a lot of time researching other photographers’ work. And I’m currently busy growing out my hair so my boyfriend can chop it off again.
